Honours Bachelor of Arts Sociology
Studying sociology involves the systematic examination of individuals and groups engaging in patterned behaviours, exploring the connection between personal experiences and broader societal frameworks. We study social processes and institutions, exploring diverse areas such as family dynamics in society, education systems, healthcare structures, social inequality, immigration patterns, race and ethnic relations, as well as aspects of paid and unpaid work and political systems.
In the program, students receive foundational knowledge in sociological theory and methods, with a focus on introductory courses in the second year and an additional research course in the third year, which provides exposure to quantitative research methods. While lecture courses are part of all four years, there are opportunities for smaller class sizes in the fourth year, offering a mix of lecture and seminar courses.
Sociology students develop strong reflective thinking skills, allowing them to hone their problem-solving and critical thinking abilities, which are highly valued by employers in various professional fields. Our program places an emphasis on nurturing these skills, equipping students for careers that demand complex problem-solving and effective decision-making. Additionally, the Honours in Sociology program cultivates effective communication skills and a heightened social awareness, positioning sociology graduates as valuable assets in fields such as public relations and community engagement.
