Dr. Emily Laxer

Emily Laxer talk: April 24, 3pm LRW-1003

The Sociology Department welcomes Dr. Emily Laxer from Glendon College, York University, who will give a talk based on her new book, Unveiling the Nation: The Politics of Secularism in France and Quebec. The talk is scheduled for 3pm on Wednesday, April 24, in L.R. Wilson 1003.

Apr 17, 2019

Dr. Laxer’s talk will engage contemporary debates in both France and Quebec about social policy governing religious clothing. While proponents of more restrictive policies couch their arguments in the language of secularism, opponents have accused these policies of targeting Muslim women, whose head scarves are at the centre of this debate.

Dr. Laxer’s book will launch this month. You can find it at the McGill-Queen’s University Press website.
