Dr. William (Billy) Shaffir

Dr. Shaffir and Qualitative Sociological Review special issue

Special issue of Qualitative Sociological Review celebrates the career contributions of Dr. William Shaffir.

May 20, 2020

Dr. William (Billy) Shaffir is regarded as a key figure in the school of symbolic interactionism and ethnographic research. Having graduated from McGill in 1972 he then moved to McMaster University where he was influential in the development of the body of knowledge in symbolic interactionism, both in the department of Sociology at McMaster, and in Canada as a whole. Billy has been central in developing McMaster University as one of the most globally renowned institutions for the study of interactionist field research. The Special Edition in Qualitative Sociology Review Volume XVI Issue 2 Festschrift for William Shaffir edited by Antony J. Puddephatt and Steven Kleinknecht pays tribute to the scholarship and legacy of William Shaffir. Each of the contributors speak to the impact of his teachings and mentorship. A common thread which ties the articles in the issue together is the “deep respect and admiration people have for Billy as a personal role model and mentor” (Puddephatt and Kleinknecht, 2020).
