Dr. Gregory Hooks in partnership the Prison Policy Initiative released a report on the links between mass incarceration and the spread of COVID-19 (in the United States).

The report provides the first estimates of how prisons and jails have added to COVID-19 caseloads across the country. This is the first report to measure how the spread of the coronavirus behind bars has also sped up the spread of the virus outside of prisons and jails.

Dec 15, 2020

The report itself summarizes major national findings, but it also includes links to appendices providing estimates of how many cases were linked to incarceration in every county, economic area, and state in the U.S.

Our national findings:

·         At the county level: We found that over the summer, prisons and jails directly contributed to higher COVID-19 caseloads in nonmetro counties.

·         At the regional level: We found that COVID-19 caseloads grew much more quickly over the summer in multi-county economic areas with more incarcerated people.

·         At the national level: We estimate that mass incarceration led to more than half a million additional COVID-19 cases nationwide over the summer.
