Beyond the Media-Policy-Migration Nexus: Changing the Narrative on Refugee Reception

Dr. Christopher Kyriakides holds the Canada Research Chair with the Department of Sociology and is a member of the Executive Committee of the Centre for Refugee Studies at York University.

In this presentation Kyriakides will discuss findings from a recent SSHRC/IRCC funded research project on Syrian refugee resettlement in Canada, drawing out how and why it was necessary to develop a conceptual framework that moves beyond what he calls the media-policy-migration nexus.

Kyriakides will discuss how the research was guided by a grounded approach which sought to by-pass both the migrant-refugee policy distinction and mediatised frames of ‘refugeeness’. While drawing out some of the limitations inherent to the approach, Kyriakides will further discuss why thinking critically beyond resettlement policy frameworks can both enhance resettlement policy and have a beneficial effect on ‘refugee-host’ relations.
