Scholarships

Internal Scholarships

The Sociology department offers competitive scholarship funding to every PhD student and many MA students. These scholarships are intended to help students excel and complete their work in a timely manner.

External Scholarships

Many of our current and incoming students receive prestigious external scholarships from external agencies (OGS, SSHRC, CIHR etc.). Our department offers excellent workshops and one-on-one help to craft top quality applications. Currently, an impressive third of our current graduate students are funded by external agencies.

TA/RA Positions

Every PhD student and many MA students are offered a Teaching Assistantship or a Research Assistantship in lieu of a Teaching Assistantship totaling approximately $11,520 for a full year and $5,760 for a half year for 10 hours per week. These positions not only offer additional funding, but also provide beneficial career experience and professional development.

Travel Scholarships

The Department of Sociology provides PhD students with funding towards travel expenses for the purpose of research or professional development such as attending and presenting at conferences. While this does depend on yearly budget, PhD students admitted in 2017 were given $2000. The Graduate Student’s Association at McMaster also offers scholarships for travel that can be applied for each term.
