Examining immigrants’ sense of belonging in Canada

Sociology alumni Max Stick’s recent article based on his dissertation was published in the Journal of International Migration and Integration.
An article by Max Stick (Mount Saint Vincent University), Lisa Kaida (Sociology, McMaster University) and Feng Hou (Statistics Canada) examined the association between source-country gender inequality and immigrants’ sense of belonging to Canada. Using the multiple cycles of Statistics Canada’s General Social Survey and data from the United Nations Development Programme, the results show that immigrants from countries with higher levels of gender inequality are more likely to report a stronger sense of belonging to Canada than those from countries that are more gender egalitarian. These findings suggest that immigrants from diverse cultures will develop a strong sense of belonging to Canada.
