Congratulations to our PhD students, Natasha Martino and Alysha McDonald, and Dr. Luca Berardi, on their recently published article in Social Problems. Based on 181 longitudinal interviews, their article examines the emotional experiences of loved ones of incarcerated men in Canada. Emotional responses including ambiguous loss, anticipated burdens, and respite, capture the ambivalence of navigating incarceration from the outside. These dynamics are shaped by gender, the welfare state, and carceral governance, and invite a broader reflection on punishment, and care beyond prison walls.
