This Year's John Porter Book Award

The Canadian Sociological Association present this year's John Porter Book Award to McMaster Sociology Professor Dr. Vic Satzewich, for Points of Entry: How Canada’s Immigration Officers Decide Who Gets In (2015).

May 31, 2016

The book draws on data gathered from eleven overseas visa offices to examine how immigration officers implement discretion in their decisions about who is given or denied entry into Canada. Satzewich finds that, rather than simply being about individual bias, decisions are based more broadly on the organizational culture and local knowledges. Reflecting the Porter tradition, the book considers a topic—the inner workings of the Department of Immigration—that is not only timely, but written in a highly accessible manner for a broad readership.
